eventful day

Today, I spent 3+ hours wrapping mochi, and it wasn't until the 147th one that I finally "got" how to wrap mochi correctly.

Also, I accidentally stepped in a very sticky mouse trap. The chefs were unsuccessful in catching mice, but they were successful in catching a Nancy. Now my shoes make a sticky sound whenever I walk. Sigh.

I almost forgot! We ordered in burgers today b/c we were super hungry (and yet we work in a kitchen?!), but because I still can't open my mouth really wide, I had to find some other way to eat it. Solution: cut the burger into small pieces, and proceed to eat a piece of bun, a piece of tomato, a piece of patty, a piece of bun...repeat. A piece of bun, a piece of tomato, a piece of patty, a piece of bun...repeat.

a day in the life of nancy wu

Monday - Saturday

8:00 - wake up, morning routine, check email, do QTs, eat breakfast

9:40 - walk to work

(street outside the place where I'm staying)

9:55 - arrive at work; change into black suit-uniform

(we're all required to wear our hair in a bun...sometimes I see my coworkers with their hair down and I can't recognize them! hahaha)

9:59 - punch card in

10:00 - stand at the front desk, and proceed to do one of the following: go on google reader, check email, gchat, chat with co-workers and use www.xuezhongwen.net as a reference, or sit and stare at them doing work....

10:30 - head upstairs for lunch!

(we sit kind of segregated =P hahaha)

11:00 - back to doing nothing

(nice lobby area; that room over there is where the hosts work)

11:30 - employee roll call

(only the heads of each dept. show up; also serves as an announcement time. takes place in front of those doors by the purple glass wall)

11:50 - head upstairs, change into chef uniform!

(it definitely gets dirty every day. I have to wash my uniforms every two days. sigh. Also, the other chef uniforms are waaaay cooler than mine. Mine was kinda dug up last minute..hehehe)

11:55 - head downstairs to the pastry room. do a hodgepodge of things, such as: baking cakes, making mousses, cutting cakes made the day before, decorating the cakes after cutting them, washing dishes, assembling desserts on a plate to look pretty for customers, weighing endless amounts of ingredients, asking 298374 questions to my two "masters"

(yep. we used 11 litres of heavy cream for one dessert one time. nasty)

4:30 - dinner time! and chat with my coworkers!

(there's always rice or fried noodles. meat, fish, vegetables, soup, and a dessert soup. their green bean soup is delish)

5:05 - my "masters" return from their "rest", and we proceed with dessert-making

7:00 - get off work & punch card out, unless I stay late to help out. Latest I've stayed is 9:00PM, when the other chefs leave

7:15 - leave work, and either: walk home directly, go buy a bubble tea before heading home, go grocery shopping before heading home, wander around town by myself...

(bubble tea. delicious, freshly made, and super cheap...ahhhhh)

8:00 - shower

8:15 - gchat, write emails, listen to sermons, read, watch gossip girl, play with Bailey....

10:30 - sleeeeeeep

i'm still alive

My first tooth took 20 minutes to extract.

My second tooth took 15 minutes to extract.

The stitching for the second tooth took almost half an hour because it was so far back.

My bleeding took an hour and a half to stop.

Thank God I'm still alive.

PS - my teeth were HUGE! zomg. I would have taken a picture of them, but I doubt any of you would have wanted to see....

why did God create wisdom teeth, only to have them be removed?!

"t-i-wan"

I'm going to start a new series of posts, titled "t-i-wan" for "This Is Taiwan," inspired by the "TIA" (standing for "This is Africa") taken from Blood Diamond. Plus, if you say "t-i-wan" fast enough, it sounds like you're saying "Taiwan!" Heh heh heh.... I'll use this saying for things that are extremely unique and would only happen in a place like Taiwan...

Allow me to introduce you to "t-i-wan" -- supermarket shopping.

(I wonder if Burger King actually gave them a license to use their name...)

Every day I check the weather to see if I need to bring my umbrella to work. Every day there is a chance of thunderstorm, so I bring my umbrella. But it never rains. What the heck... ?!?! Oh, I know... It's called humidity. Boooo.

A day with my mom's side of the family

A quick explanation of my blog name

Hi friends! Welcome to my new blog :)

I decided to document my experiences in Taiwan in a separate blog than my normal wildchildwu 10PM bedtime one. The blog address of "taiwildchildwu" is to keep it consistent with my other one while also mixing it up a bit with a reference to taiwan and also playing on the chinese word "tai" (太), meaning "too," thus making my blog address "too wild child wu".

As for the roots, branches, and vines... One reason I came to Taiwan was to connect with my family heritage and ancestry (is that the right word?) and therefore get connected to my "roots". I wanted to be able to spend an extended amount of time with my relatives (75% of whom all live in Taiwan. Only one other family is in the US). I thought it'd be kinda important to keep good relations with my relatives, especially as we're all getting older and have less time to travel back and forth across continents.

The vines and branches come from one of my favorite verses, John 15:5, which says "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing." I want these next months to be a time when I can really be connected to God through the Word and through prayer so that I can bear fruit that will last and also so that I can grow. This might be stretching the analogy, but just as branches grow and grow outwards, so I also want to get a clearer direction for my future (aka my life is a branch, and it's just growing longer). Okay,.... I admit that's kind of lame.

Anyway.................................. here's my new blog! Yay.
